ANOTHER FASTEST ELECTIC CAR

KAMALA K360R: No British auto show would be complete without a slew of low-volume, high-performance cars aimed at die-hard enthusiasts and madmen. The Kamala’s calling card is a 0-60 time of three seconds when fitted with a highly turbocharged version of Ford’s 2.0-liter Duratec engine mounted behind the driver. It’s really meant for track usage, but a road-legal package is available.

TOYOTA PERSONAL TRAVEL ASSISTANT

Thought the personal transport assistant trend was DOA? Think again

The Winglet: Photo by Toyota
Segway users, look behind your shoulder. Another “personal transport assistant” is waiting in the wings.
The Toyota Winglet will be used in trials at a Japanese airport and shopping center in 2009, with a planned mass deployment in early 2010. It’s much slower than the Segway with a top speed of only 3.7 mph, but comes in three models: the S (which is only 18 inches tall and weighs 22 pounds), the M (27 inches tall and 27 pounds), and the L (about 4 feet tall and the same weight as the M). Both the S and M use leg braces to help you steer, while the L provides a handle bar. Like the Segway, the Winglet senses weight shifts for steering and speed and can slow down or stop if you teeter too much.
In a video demo, a Toyota representative effortless drove around a stage with the S model. Trials in Japan will determine how well the device maneuvers in crowded areas, and how pedestrians not riding on a Winglet will react. The press release for the Winglet mentions how the Toyota robotics division intends to help contribute the “health and comfort” of future society. My only comment: in current society, with pervasive electronic entertainment, gas-guzzling cars, and a coach-potato lifestyle, it seems as though introducing another vehicle that does not require physical excursion is counter-productive.
But who knows? The Winglet looks slick and portable, a device that is light enough to carry in the car and use on a whim. It could also provide more mobility for those who walk to work every day. In the US, it’s still unclear whether devices such as the Segway and Winglet will catch on; but manufacturers seem to have few qualms pushing them.

Next-Wave Astrovan: Canadians Pen All-Electric Concept With Aeronautic Touches

It has the profile of a Toyota Prius interpreted by the late Maxime Faget, designer of the Space Shuttle. It's the Hinterland 1, a conceptual all-electric minivan with a drag coefficient of less than 0.25 (the Prius's is 0.26). And if its designers get their way, it'll become a Canadian icon on par with the CN Tower, Geddy Lee and Poutine.
Chief designer of the Hinterland 1 is a veteran of Québec-based Bombardier Recreational Products, maker of the Sea-Doo watercraft, who says the project "combines sources of artistic, technical and scientific expertise" from recreational vehicles, electric motors and batteries, aeronautics, aluminium, plastics processing and video games. In theory, the sculpted body would comprise an aeronautical-style aluminum monocoque, fashioned by the same hydroforming process GM uses to create body panels for its curvy Pontiac Solstice roadster. A drive system proposed by electric-car startup Higgins-Aubé would involve a 43 kW-max motor (14kW continuous) powered by Li-ion or Zebra (Sodium Nickel Chloride) batteries with a maximum power of 37,000 kilowatts. Designers envision two models built on the same platform, a two-seater "Mini" and the six-person "Van."

GULF SIGNS MAJOR NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH ASTON MARTIN RACING

Gulf Oil International is delighted to announce a major motorsport partnership initiative for 2008 and beyond, as it links up with Aston Martin Racing to become sponsors of the factory race team's Le Mans entry for three years.

The 2008 Aston Martin works cars with their famous 007 and 009 numbering will run in Gulf's iconic blue and orange livery at La Sarthe in June to become the latest in a long line of successful endurance race cars to carry the legendary livery.

Indeed, 2008 will mark the 40th anniversary of Gulf's first victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours, something of which Gulf Oil International Vice President, Alain Dujean is also keenly aware. "This is arguably the most important year ever for Gulf in motorsport.

The famous Gulf racing colours first tasted victory at Le Mans in 1968, so 2008 already had great significance for us, but for Gulf to have joined up with Aston Martin Racing is fantastic - the coming together of two great automotive names, for what I hope will be a long and fruitful partnership."

The agreement will cover two enormously significant anniversaries for both concerns, as 2009 also marks the 50th anniversary of Aston Martin's outright Le Mans win.

Prior to 2008 the Gulf colours have been seen on the factory race cars of Ford (1966-69) Porsche (1970-71) Mirage (1974-75) and McLaren (1995-6) as well as on top line works-supported entries from Audi (2001), Courage (2005-6) and Zytek (2007).

David Richards, Chairman of Aston Martin, is also delighted with the Aston Martin Racing-Gulf partnership. “Endurance racing is engrained in the heritage of both Gulf and Aston Martin and we have also both been intrinsically linked through Le Mans for many decades. It was perhaps destined that, in the year we defend our GT1 title and Gulf celebrates the 40th anniversary of its win, we would finally race together at La Sarthe.“

Alain Dujean continues, "This is one of the most exciting announcements I have ever been able to give our global affiliates. Our link up with Aston Martin Racing will give them many new opportunities to capitalise for their businesses.

There is now a depth of resource that exists solely to help them make the most of Gulf's new partnership and should offer a whole new dimension in marketing Gulf's involvement with this iconic brand. We have a fully liveried show car and some very well known drivers that are available to any of them and I expect that take-up of the various activities that both Gulf Oil International and Aston Martin Racing can offer to be at an unprecedented level."

MERCEDES-BENZ BIONIC CAR

DaimlerChrysler is using a new concept vehicle to examine the great potential of bionics for automobile development, and has achieved outstanding results for fuel consumption and emissions with a combination of pioneering diesel engine technology and innovative emission control methods.

The Mercedes-Benz bionic car study will have its world premiere at this year’s DaimlerChrysler Innovation Symposium in Washington. To realize the Mercedes-Benz bionic car, the engineers at the Mercedes-Benz Technology Centre and the DaimlerChrysler Research department have for the first time looked for a specific example in nature which not only approximates to the idea of an aerodynamic, safe, comfortable and environmentally compatible car in terms of details, but as a formal and structural whole. The example arrived at was the boxfish.

Despite its boxy, cube-shaped body, this tropical fish is in fact outstandingly streamlined and therefore represents an aerodynamic ideal. With an accurately constructed model of the boxfish the engineers in Stuttgart were able to achieve a wind drag coefficient of just 0.06 in the wind tunnel. In order to use this great potential for automobile development purposes, specialists at DaimlerChrysler first created a 1:4 car model whose shape was substantially based on the boxfish.

During tests in the wind tunnel, a drag coefficient of 0.095 – a previously unprecedented value in automotive engineering – was measured for this clay model. It corresponds to the values achieved with highly streamlined shapes (Cd 0.09) and other aerodynamically ideal forms. DaimlerChrysler utilized the findings from this research during the development of the Mercedes-Benz bionic car, a fully functioning and roadworthy compact car with a length of 4.24 meters and space for four occupants plus luggage.

With a Cd value of just 0.19, this concept vehicle is among the most aerodynamically efficient in this size category. 20 percent lower fuel consumption and up to 80 percent lower nitrogen oxides emissions In addition to superb aerodynamics and a lightweight construction concept derived from nature, the 140-hp diesel engine and innovative SCR technology (Selective Catalytic Reduction) greatly contribute to fuel economy and a further reduction in exhaust emissions.

In the EU driving cycle the concept car has a fuel consumption of 65.7 mpg – 20 less than a comparable series-production car. In accordance with the US measuring method (FTP 75) the range is around 70 miles per US gallon (combined), which is about 30 percent more than for a standard-production car. At a constant speed of 56 mph the direct-injection diesel unit consumes only 100.9 mpg – corresponding to a range of 84 miles per gallon in the US test cycle. DaimlerChrysler is currently testing its SCR technology worldwide.

By this means, and with the additional operating fluid “AdBlue”, the nitrogen oxides emissions of the direct-injection diesel engine can be reduced by up to 80 percent. The aim of these trials is to avoid the fuel consumption disadvantages by optimizing the in-engine combustion processes. This is where Mercedes-Benz car engineers are benefiting from the experience gained by their colleagues in the commercial vehicle sector, where SCR technology is already in successful use.

DaimlerChrysler also intends to use the great potential of this process for diesel passenger cars in future, and will initially be offering SCR technology in the USA when the trials have been completed. “AdBlue” is an aqueous urea solution which is sprayed into the exhaust system in precisely metered quantities, depending on the engine operating status.

This converts the nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water. The reservoir for this service fluid is located in the spare wheel recess of the concept car, and its capacity is sufficient for a mileage corresponding to the service interval for a current Mercedes diesel model. The Mercedes-Benz bionic car study is also equipped with a maintenance-free diesel particulate filter.

Great rigidity and low weight – a growth principle designed by nature The boxfish, the aerodynamic model for the concept car, is also a prime example of rigidity and light weight. Its skin consists of numerous hexagonal, bony plates which provide maximum strength with minimal weight and effectively protect the animal from injury. DaimlerChrysler researchers examined this bionic structure and transferred this principle to the Mercedes-Benz bionic car study with the help of a special calculation process.

The process is based on the principles of bone formation and for instance allows up to 40 percent more rigidity to be achieved in the external door paneling than would be possible with conventional designs. If the entire body shell is calculated according to this bionic principle, the total weight is reduced by around one third with undiminished strength and crash safety.

The Mercedes-Benz bionic car Streamlined and light, like a fish in water – economical and environmentally friendly thanks to the latest diesel technology Thinking the unthinkable. Looking beyond the horizon. Leaving familiar paths and giving new ideas a chance: that is the philosophy of DaimlerChrysler, the technological leader among automobile manufacturers.

For more than 100 years the technological lead of the Stuttgart company has been based on the creativity of its engineers – and on their enthusiasm for visions. None of this has changed to the present day, and DaimlerChrysler specialists take up the challenge to shape the future of the automobile on a daily basis.

There are no limits here: in order to create trailblazing innovations for even more safety, environmental compatibility and comfort, they research all the possibilities offered by technology and science.

For experience has shown that only free, interdisciplinary thinking leads to really outstanding results. One such project was the Mercedes-Benz bionic car, a concept vehicle based on examples in nature, in which DaimlerChrysler has also transferred the diesel engine technology of the future to a fully functioning and practical car for everyday use. Bionics – a combination of biology and technology – is a quite recent field of research which has nonetheless already made remarkable progress possible in different areas.

Nature has provided ideas for high-strength materials, low-friction surfaces, dirt-repellent coatings and practical Velcro fastenings, for example. Many of these inventions are based on more or less accidental discoveries from the animal and plant world.

For the first time in the case of the Mercedes-Benz bionic car, the engineers at the Mercedes-Benz Technology Center (MTC) and DaimlerChrysler Research looked for a specific example in nature whose shape and structure approximated to their ideas for an aerodynamic, safe, spacious and environmentally compatible car.

WORLD FIRST MECHANICAL DRIVING SIMULATOR

Toyota has build the world's largest driving simulator located at Toyota’s Higashifuji Technical Centre in Japan. This driving simulator puts a real vehicle inside a virtual-reality dome which serves as a giant 360-degree video screen. As virtual driving begins, the dome, which sits upon an elevated platform, tilts and vibrates while the platform glides across an area of four tennis courts.

As a result, the driving simulator provides realistic driving sensations like a sense of speed, deceleration and turns and other driving maneuvers. The purpose of such a simulator is to provides one of the world’s most-realistic simulated driving environments, allowing driving habits and reactions to be accurately gauged.

It will mainly be used to analyze driving characteristics under such conditions as falling asleep at the wheel and drowsiness, glancing from side to side and not checking that the road is safe, fatigue or illness, as well as developing active safety technology for effectively reducing the number of accidents.

lewis hamillton wins on his home

On a very damp track in Silverstone, Lewis Hamilton gave his home fans a race to remember, after being in a class of his own, building a lead that went over a minute from his nearest competitor.

"It is by far the best victory I’ve ever had", he said in the beginning of the press conference, as he indeed was phenomenal right from the start, after being placed fourth on the grid.

Nick Heidfeld scored an amazing second place, after a magnificent performance as well, giving BMW some consolation to their champion's retirement, and giving everyone a reminder of what the German is truly capable of.

In third place came Rubens Barrichello, who has finally made it back to the podium for the first time since 2005, leading Honda to their first one in almost two years. The achievement could be attributed to Team Principal Ross Brawn though, who made a very clever decision shifting his drivers to extreme wet tyres on Lap 35.

Former champion Kimi Raikkonen came in 4th position after a wrong decision by Ferrari cost them the Grand Prix, as they chose not to change his tyres on his first stop and leave him with his worn ones.

"We really did not expect it to start raining", were indeed his words after the race, and this was definitely a turning point in Silverstone.

A late battle for P5 was won by Kovalainen as he finally got past Alonso in the 59th lap, after being on his tale for more than five laps prior to that.

Jarno Trulli, who started 14th on the grid, was able to clinch 7th position in the final metres of the race, as he overtook Nakajima, who was in turn trying to overtake Alonso.

Mark Webber had a sad afternoon after spinning on his first lap to go back from 2nd place to 20th, and by that Toyota grabs 4th position from Red Bull after a great set of performances by the Japanese team.

Felipe Massa also had a terrible day, as he was in fact acting like an amateur, spinning every few corners and ending up last among those who finished.

Robert Kubica was another victim of the rain, as he lost control over his BMW on Lap 41 to end his race and delay his hopes of regaining his top spot in the drivers championship.

With the British Grand Prix over, the top three drivers (Lewis Hamilton, Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen) are tied at 48 points each, two points ahead from BMW's Robert Kubica who couldn't make it to the finish line on Sunday.
