China is now World biggest car market

China is poised to overtake the US as the world’s biggest car-market in 2009, according to estimates released by General Motors.

Based on January’s sales, China’s new car market is forecast to hit 10.7m units by the year’s end, versus 9.8m in the US.

If true, it will mark a further milestone in the meteoric growth of the Chinese new car market, which overtook Japan’s a couple of years ago.

With a population of at least one billion people, China has potentially four times more car buyers than either the US or EU, whose populations are around 240m each.

Today only 200m Chinese are ranked as ‘middle-class’, with a salary big enough to afford a new car, but that figure is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years.

GM estimates that new car sales in January in China reached 790,000 units. GM has to estimate the figures because official numbers take a long time to be collated. The equivalent figure for the US was 668,000.

Mitsubishi teams up with proton

Mitsubishi and Proton have previously worked in the past with Proton using Mitsubishi engines to power its cars, but last week the two companies signed another deal which will license Malaysia’s major automobile manufacturer, Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd (PONSB) access to Mitsubishi technology and expertise for the development of an all new PROTON vehicle.

Ford May Sell Its 33.4-percent of Mazda

DaimlerChrysler is the poster child for this rule. Reaction to Saturday's news that General Motors is looking for a hook-up with Cerberus' Chrysler has been overwhelmingly negative, so far. The Wall Street Journal reports Monday that GM's board is "cool" to the idea of buying Chrysler, and rightly so. The likely scenario is that Cerberus, which has owned Chrysler for little more than a year, would sell its 81.1% interest (Cerberus recently told Daimler that it wants to buy the German automaker's remaining 18.9%) in the automaker to GM in exchange for GM's 49.9%t of GMAC. Cerberus owns 50.1 percent of GMAC.

I'm at a loss to explain why anyone would want to buy more interest in a mortgage/loan company right now.Who'd want to buy a car company, for that matter, at a time when liquidity for car loans has almost completely dried up? The Journal reports elsewhere that Ford Motor Company -- which earlier this year rejected GM's advances -- may try to sell its 33.4% controlling interest in Mazda. Selling Mazda would seem to be easier than, say, GM's attempts to unload Hummer. Mazda builds mostly fuel-efficient small and medium-size cars with EPA numbers in the 20s and 30s, like the Mazda3, Mazda6, and MX-5 Miata. And that controlling interest in Mazda is one of the few assets that FoMoCo didn't take to the pawnshop in its $24 billion fundraiser of 2006.

Downside is that Ford and Mazda do a lot of platform-sharing, including Fiesta/Mazda2, Edge/CX-7 and Fusion/Mazda6. And Ford/Mazda's joint venture Flat Rock, Michigan, factory is flexible enough to build front-drive Mazda6s alongside rear-drive Mustangs.Selling Mazda would raise much-needed cash for Ford. Similarly, if GM can find a buyer for its minority share of GMAC, it would provide a bit more operating capital. Analysts say, though, that its share of GMAC is worth about $6- to $7-billion, which would maybe buy it an extra fiscal quarter. And in light of how bad the financial crisis got last week, it's hard to think of anyone GM or Ford could find who is willing or able to buy up such assets these days.

Gm and Ford cut production in Europe

In recent months, even as the American economy has slowed, high gas prices have driven consumers out of trucks and SUVs, and the weakening dollar has eaten into automakers' profits, one saving grace for Ford and GM has been their impressive performance in Europe. Despite suffering huge losses at home, the General's sales continued to grow in the Old World, while Dearborn's European division was on pace for a record year. Now, however, it looks like the credit crisis that's spread from Wall Street to Main Street is beginning to reach the Piazzas and Strassen, too, as both companies are cutting Euro production to cope with a sudden slump in demand.

Despite unveiling a slew of products such as the Ka, Kuga, and new Fiesta over the past year, Ford of Europe has begun to see its sales slip and production outpace demand. This is particularly true in Germany, and today the company is moving to cut output at its Saarlouis manufacturing plant and lay off 204 part-time workers. Saarlouis currently employs approximately 6500 workers and builds the Focus, C-Max, and Cougar, but the Blue Oval isn't saying exactly how many vehicles will be cut by the move. The automaker's Cologne plant, which makes the new Fiesta and was recently dubbed "The Love Factory" in an advertising campaign, will continue to run at full capacity.

While Dearborn's move is relatively small, GM is taking more drastic measures to avoid creating a glut in the market. With sales in Western Europe down 9.2% across the industry, the automaker will halt production at all but one of its Old World plants for at least two weeks. Opel spokesman Andreas Kroemer explains that the company is "feeling the effects of the financial crisis" because "people are holding onto their money and not ordering cars." So rather than stockpile unwanted vehicles and lower their residual values (a problem plaguing the company's American division), by shutting down, the General will build 40,000 fewer European vehicles this year. The only factory remaining open during this period is the Russelsheim plant near Frankfurt, which builds the brand-new Opel/Vauxhall Insignia.

Though the shuttered plants are set to go back online in the coming weeks, GM also plans to push for more sales in eastern Europe, and in particular Russia, which has become the number-one car market on the Continent. Despite a strong euro versus the dollar, even luxury automakers like Daimler are cutting production in their home market due to falling demand. Clearly if the current economic slowdown continues to spread, it won't be just American showrooms that are hurting for customers.

Ferrari says no to sedan or four door

Ferrari president Luca Cordero di Montezemolo made it clear: "I have been president of this company for nearly twenty years, and I hope to continue for another twenty, and as long as that is so, Ferrari will not make a four-door sedan."

It was a logical enough question for the handsome, di Montezemolo here at the Paris motor show, as cross-town rival Lamborghini rolled out the Estoque four-door concept, one of the show's most talked-about reveals. "We will continue to build extreme cars, sporty cars, larger GTs, but a sedan is not right for Ferrari." When asked about the radical Lambo sedan concept that is on its way to production, he replied simply, "Good luck."

People still remember the Pinin, a four-door Ferrari concept designed and built in 1981 by Pininfarina, so it was a logical question to ask. But that car was never an official Ferrari project; it sold as "automobilia" not as a car, at RM Auction's Legenda e Passione sale at the Ferrari factory in May.

I agree with Mr. di Montezemolo. Every carmaker should explore unique automotive forms, but this is a place that Ferrari should never, ever go. I believe this is one of the reasons Lamborghini put forth the Estoque, because they know Ferrari will not respond in kind with its own sedan. This gives Lambo some clear air in the exoticar stratosphere.

Over the next few years, we'll find out how the Estoque, the Panamera, the Rapide, future Bentley models, and possibly others will do in this space. No matter, this particular fight will take place without Ferrari. It's a place Maranello doesn't belong, and I'm pleased they feel no need to go there.

American Car Breaks World Speed Record

SSC Ultimate Aero
view slideshow >For the first time since 1967, the Guinness World Record for “Fastest Production Car” belongs to an American automobile. Guinness has officially confirmed that Shelby Supercars’ Ultimate Aero hit 256.19 miles per hour on a remote highway in Washington last month.

A local 71-year-old car enthusiast named Chuck Bigelow drove the Ultimate Aero to the new world record

The Ultimate Aero shattered the record previously held by the Swedish Koenigsegg CCR by 15 mph. Bugatti claims that its Veyron 16.4 has hit 253.52 mph, but the number is unofficial and not recognized by Guinness.
The 2,750-pound Ultimate Aero was able to topple the record thanks to a twin-turbocharged V8 engine turning out 1183 horsepower and 1094 pound-feet of torque. Highly developed aerodynamics to help keep the vehicle stable at extremely high speeds. The Ultimate Aero is exceedingly low to the ground — so low that there’s a switch in the cabin that lifts the front of the car four inches to help it better navigate uneven surfaces. (The Ferrari Enzo has a similar feature.)
Jerod Shelby said that the Ultimate Aero was in development for six years and was explicitly designed with the “Fastest Production Car” record in mind. “As a smaller U.S.-based manufacturer, the difficulty is to gain credibility and legitimize your product," he said." Six years ago we knew that the best way to do this would be to go for the speed record in order to put ourselves on the map."
To qualify for Guinness' production car speed record, the Ultimate Aero had to be fueled by pump gasoline (as opposed to extra-high-octane fuel used in race cars), plus meet all Department of Transportation safety regulations and Environmental Protection Agency emissions standards.

Guinness requires cars competing for the record to make two passes over the same course within one hour. They then average the speeds achieved on both runs. The Ultimate Aero’s driver, Bigelow, hit 257.45 mph on his first pass, then 254.92 on the way back.
The temporarily closed highway on which the Ultimate Aero was tested was a relatively short course that may have prevented it from achieving its true potential, as wind tunnel testing has shown the Ultimate Aero to be stable up to 273 mph. SSC hopes to someday test the Ultimate Aero out on a Volkswagen-owned test track in Ehra-Lessien, Germany, where the Koenigsegg and Bugatti were able to make their marks on a 5.6-mile straightaway

They company has sold seven of the $579,000 Ultimate Aeros out of a production run of 50. The car went on sale this year.

The last American car to break Guinness' production-car speed record was the Ford GT40, thirty years ago.

General Motors Recalls 944,000 Vehicles

A problem with the windshield wiper-fluid system in various GM vehicles could lead to a fire

General Motors is recalling 944,000 vehicles because of a problem with a windshield wiper fluid system that could lead to a fire.

More than 850,000 sport utility vehicles, trucks and passenger cars in the United States and nearly 100,000 vehicles in Canada, Mexico and the Middle East are involved in the recall, the company said.
GM said it includes the 2008
Buick Enclave, 2006-2008 Buick Lucerne, 2006-2008 Cadillac DTS, 2007-2008 Cadillac Escalade, 2007-2008 Cadillac Escalade ESV, 2007-2008 Cadillac Escalade EXT, 2007-2008 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban, 2007-2008 GMC Acadia, Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL, 2006-2008 Hummer H2 and 2007-2008 Saturn Outlook
.
The recall involves vehicles with a heated washer fluid system. A short circuit in the system could cause electrical features to malfunction, which could lead to an odor, smoke or potentially a fire.
GM spokeswoman Carolyn Markey said there have been nine reports of fires and three of them have been linked to the system. There have been no accidents or injuries connected to the defect, she said.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation last February into 2007 Yukon and Tahoe vehicles over potential engine compartment fires. In June, the highway safety agency upgraded its investigation into about 2.7 million 2007-2008 GM trucks and SUVs and reported allegations of 41 engine fires.
Dealers will install a wire harness with an in-line fuse to fix the problem free of charge, GM said.

Make Faster calls with Lamborghini cell phone

Though automotive product tie-ins can be a mixed bag, with examples like Mercedes' Motorsport clothing collection, Audi's set of golf clubs, Pagani's high-end stereo, and the Ferrari-branded clock radio for $2995, car companies have leant their logos to thousands of products over the years. Now Lamborghini, which already has a popular merchandise line covering everything from clothes to laptop computers to (jokingly) sick bags, has put its stamp on a new must-have gadget -- a Windows smart phone.
Finished in yellow and black, the new Asus ZX1 smart phone measures 4.5 inches tall, 2.3 inches wide, and half an inch thick, and features Lamborghini script on its face. The device's back is stainless steel and carbon fiber, and includes the automaker's signature shield logo in its center. Running a version of Windows Mobile 6.1 with Asus' new "Glide" user interface, the phone includes a 2.5-inch touch screen interface and boasts some impressive multimedia capabilities. And with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, a MicroSD expansion slot, and two cameras on hand, the 3G device should be more than capable of handling any enterprise situation as well.Featuring both work and weekend modes that are fully customizable, the phone's UI also has a distinct Sant'Agata Bolognese theme, including meters that resemble boost gauges and a tachometer clock. No word on pricing at the moment, but considering that Lamborghini's current Nokia mobile sells for 1350 Euros, don't expect the new cutting-edge smart phone to come cheap. Then again if you have to go on a business trip and leave your LP640 in the garage, with the ZX1 in your pocket you can be reminded of its 631 horsepower every time you call home

Lamborghini sprayed Plasma Coating on exhaust of Reventon

Lamborghini has equipped the F22 Raptor-inspired $1.4 million Reventon exotic car with a high-tech exhaust treatment by Zircotec originally developed for the nuclear industry. The Diamond Black plasma-sprayed coating functions as a thermal barrier, minimizing heat transfer from the tailpipes and protecting the hot Reventon bodywork from burning.
The special coating is more durable than paint, and, important on a car like the Reventon, works well from a style sense.

"The Zircotec coating was the only coating that satisfied all our requirements," said Luca Meschiari, Head of Exhausts at Lamborghini. "[It] offers significantly better performance than any other solution we have seen."The coating has been used in Formula 1, World Rally, and classic cars, and seems like a fitting functional upgrade to the top Lamborghini. The above photo of the Lamborghini Reventon is from Motor Trend's wallpaper gallery.

GULF SIGNS MAJOR NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH ASTON MARTIN RACING

Gulf Oil International is delighted to announce a major motorsport partnership initiative for 2008 and beyond, as it links up with Aston Martin Racing to become sponsors of the factory race team's Le Mans entry for three years.

The 2008 Aston Martin works cars with their famous 007 and 009 numbering will run in Gulf's iconic blue and orange livery at La Sarthe in June to become the latest in a long line of successful endurance race cars to carry the legendary livery.

Indeed, 2008 will mark the 40th anniversary of Gulf's first victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours, something of which Gulf Oil International Vice President, Alain Dujean is also keenly aware. "This is arguably the most important year ever for Gulf in motorsport.

The famous Gulf racing colours first tasted victory at Le Mans in 1968, so 2008 already had great significance for us, but for Gulf to have joined up with Aston Martin Racing is fantastic - the coming together of two great automotive names, for what I hope will be a long and fruitful partnership."

The agreement will cover two enormously significant anniversaries for both concerns, as 2009 also marks the 50th anniversary of Aston Martin's outright Le Mans win.

Prior to 2008 the Gulf colours have been seen on the factory race cars of Ford (1966-69) Porsche (1970-71) Mirage (1974-75) and McLaren (1995-6) as well as on top line works-supported entries from Audi (2001), Courage (2005-6) and Zytek (2007).

David Richards, Chairman of Aston Martin, is also delighted with the Aston Martin Racing-Gulf partnership. “Endurance racing is engrained in the heritage of both Gulf and Aston Martin and we have also both been intrinsically linked through Le Mans for many decades. It was perhaps destined that, in the year we defend our GT1 title and Gulf celebrates the 40th anniversary of its win, we would finally race together at La Sarthe.“

Alain Dujean continues, "This is one of the most exciting announcements I have ever been able to give our global affiliates. Our link up with Aston Martin Racing will give them many new opportunities to capitalise for their businesses.

There is now a depth of resource that exists solely to help them make the most of Gulf's new partnership and should offer a whole new dimension in marketing Gulf's involvement with this iconic brand. We have a fully liveried show car and some very well known drivers that are available to any of them and I expect that take-up of the various activities that both Gulf Oil International and Aston Martin Racing can offer to be at an unprecedented level."

WORLD FIRST MECHANICAL DRIVING SIMULATOR

Toyota has build the world's largest driving simulator located at Toyota’s Higashifuji Technical Centre in Japan. This driving simulator puts a real vehicle inside a virtual-reality dome which serves as a giant 360-degree video screen. As virtual driving begins, the dome, which sits upon an elevated platform, tilts and vibrates while the platform glides across an area of four tennis courts.

As a result, the driving simulator provides realistic driving sensations like a sense of speed, deceleration and turns and other driving maneuvers. The purpose of such a simulator is to provides one of the world’s most-realistic simulated driving environments, allowing driving habits and reactions to be accurately gauged.

It will mainly be used to analyze driving characteristics under such conditions as falling asleep at the wheel and drowsiness, glancing from side to side and not checking that the road is safe, fatigue or illness, as well as developing active safety technology for effectively reducing the number of accidents.
